OH CRUMBS!

Crumbs & Doilies Cupcakes

When it comes to tea and cake, I pride myself upon being something of an expert. I have always been especially fond of the humble fairy cake with its simple sponge base and butter cream icing. With the meteoric rise of the cupcake in seasons past, I knew things had moved on.

And so it was last week, when I had invited four friends to tea, that I ordered a selection of homemade cupcakes from Crumbs & Doilies, a London-based “cup cakery,” which makes some of the best in town.

My Greek friend Georgiana recommended this particular bakery over competitors like The Hummingbird Bakery because ‘they’re more imaginative.’Georgiana is a connoisseur when it comes to tasty treats around London, and generally I agree with her opinions. These cakes were so good that my guests and I talked about nothing else. In fact, we were so busy munching, we said very little at all.

Succulent sponges come in flavours like Earls Grey, lemon, Valhrona chocolate, Oreo cookie, peanut butter, red velvet, salted caramel with Maldon sea salt, and classic vanilla. Some are topped with the delicious butter cream icing which is then sprinkled with a variety of candy green dinosaurs, caramel curls, chocolate flakes and sugary stars. Bespoke toppings can be made for weddings and parties, with images or words of your choice.

Order online and have them delivered to any address in Central London or visit the Crumbs & Doilies girls at their Saturday market stalls in Duke of York’s Square on the King’s Road or Covent Garden; you can also reserve an order in advance and collect directly from the stall. There’s something truly satisfying about having your cake and eating it too, especially when it looks this pretty.
