Edinburgh Fringe Festival

OT_Edinburgh_Festival_textAugust is here and, with it, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, a highly dramatic event which offers everyone and anyone a heady mix of theatre, opera, poetry, dance, mime, comedy and general exhibitionism in all its forms. If you fancy heading up to Scotland to see some of the best (and worst) talent in the world, be sure you know how to get the most out of this extraordinary event.

The best theatre venues are The Pleasance Courtyard, The Assembly Rooms and The Smirnoff Underbelly. Shows performed here are usually better than anywhere else. If you’re brave and fancy something a little risque, head to The Spiegeltent in George Square Gardens; this Victorian, burlesque-style circus tent and beer gardens Is a venue for cheeky and ingenius performances.

Stay at The Balmoral Hotel on Prince Street (a grand Rocco Forte establishment famous for its scrumptious cream teas) or the opulent Prestonfield, which has its’ own heli pad, The Glasshouse is ideal for those who need to mix business with pleasure.

When you’re feeling peckish, hit The Baked Potato Shop on Cockburn Street is an old time favourite for veggies who want a reasonable option. You’ll have a wait, but it’s worth it. The adventurous may want to try the famous haggis pizza at Mamma’s Traditional American Pizzas on The Grassmarket (the chocolate and banana calzone is also worth a nibble). Dinner at The Tower offers grown-up food and excellent city views; afterwards, head to restaurant-cum-club Hawke and Hunter whose Whisky Room is hugely popular with visitors from all over the world. After enduring all those shows, you’ll definitely need a wee dram or two.
