Lapstone Shop-cum-Cafe in Glocestershire

Need a present for a weekend away or a wedding gift for a best friend? Want to revamp your garden with uber-smart, cast-aluminium furniture that requires no maintenance? Or do you just fancy treating yourself to a delicious lunch, a massage and a little retail therapy? Then head to Lapstone, the chicest shop in the Cotswolds with its own in-house Meg Rivers cafe.

Set in a lofty barn, the place is a haven of vaulted ceilings, roaring fires and dark wooden tables. Come in the summer and the huge windows and open courtyard prove equally cool and airy.  Light lunches served in the Meg Rivers café are simple. Quiches, pies, pasties and salads are made with locally sourced, seasonal ingredients. There is a huge terrace with views over the Cotswolds for warmer weather. Flanked by fields, you can leave your children to run riot while you shop. You can even see stags and hares passing by while you eat.

Lapstone’s wares come in all shapes and sizes with the emphasis on quirky but quality: find beautiful hardback books on anything from gardening to recipes dedicated to chocolate, best-selling fragrance diffusers, glasses and goblets, tiny towelling dressing gowns for babies and luxurious country furniture.

The ethos is based around fun and relaxation. Lapstone encourages people to come and chill out. Some people arrive in the morning for coffee and croissants, shop for a few hours, come back for lunch and don’t leave until teatime.  There are special events in the evening, while The Escape, Lapstone’s holistic ‘pamper centre,’ offers seasonal packages. The autumn special, designed to leave you properly polished and feeling great, involves a full body brushing, a salt and oil scrub and shower, followed by deeply nourishing body cream rubbed in from head to toe. Guaranteed to leave you glowing.

Now you can visit the brand new A La Mode hairdressing salon. And the new Weekend Florist offers fresh flowers and bulbs for gifts or cool fall evenings at home!

I took a few friends to Lapstone the other day for lunch. We were pleasantly surprised that we ate so well and inexpensively. The Cotswold area needs more of these low-key and reasonably priced venues for lunch and shopping.
